Lesson Plan

Clinicians need a robust understanding of linear speed, as it drives all the movements and behaviors we coach everyday: Gait, Balance, Lunge, Step Up, Stairs, and of course running.

The mechanics of sprinting just highlight the needs and bring clarity to the fundamental movements we think we understand, but the key differentiator is that sprinting gives those movements purpose. With purpose, comes learning, pattern acquisition, and movement improvement with lasting impact. We will discuss the mechanics of sprinting, patterns necessary, and specific clinical drills you can implement to see your clients have success.

 

Objectives:

  • Identify the mechanics of linear speed
  • Understand the impact of mobility and stability on linear movement
  • Apply appropriate interventions to increase linear speed potential
  • Determine programming load
  • Determine programming strategies to have successful patient/athlete adaption

Tony Mikla, PT Tony Mikla, PT

Tony Mikla is a sports physical therapist and performance coach. He is the owner and President of KIME Human Performance Institute in Sacramento, CA. The practice is dedicated to the improvement of his clients’ performance in life and on the field. Dr. Mikla speaks and teaches nationally on sports physical therapy and is active in research having published multiple papers in international journals. He previously served as the Physical Therapy Manager at the world renowned EXOS in Phoenix, AZ, working with best athletes in the world. He is adjunct faculty in PT at Sacramento State University and Northern AZ University. In 2015, Tony was named a finalist for the NSCA Sports Medicine Specialist of the year.
