This course provides an integrated education for the Doctor of Chiropractic in the Science and Art of chiropractic analysis and management of patients injured in motor vehicle collisions.  Biomechanical and neuro-physiological aspects of whiplash type acceleration / deceleration injuries will be reviewed and discussed. Emphasis will be placed on cognitive and cervical spine sensori-motor control assessments, deficits, and rehabilitation procedures for injured populations. An update-to-date review of research material will be presented supporting the utilization and efficacy of a variety of Chiropractic examination/documentation procedures, and corrective rehabilitation treatment techniques.

Objectives:

  • Review injuries and cause of abnormal cervical spine curvature after a motor vehicle collision
  • Discuss Chiropractic BioPhysics Techniques in a patient’s rehabilitation after motor vehicle collision
  • Review research about the efficacy of a variety of procedure to treat patients after motor vehicle collision.

This course is 2 hours in length, a quiz is provided at the end of the seminar, 7 questions. 75% score required to receive a certificate.

Content Outline (2 hours)
Hour 1 – Biomechanical Definition of Subluxation in Whiplash Injury Patients

  • Sagittal plane models of the cervical lordosis;
  • Biomechanical cervical subluxation categories indicative of trauma;
  • Snap through buckling as a model of abnormal cervical curvatures in the sagittal plane;
  • A literature review regarding the cervical lordosis and health outcomes in whiplash injured populations. Cognitive and sensori-motor control deficits in injured populations with cervical spine subluxation.
  • 1 hour Lecture/ Research Trends

Hour 2 – Structural outcomes: Posture, alignment, pathology, anomaly,

  • Perceptive outcomes: Pain, disability, functional and health quality of life measures,
  • Functional and Physiological assessments: Range of motion, intersegmental motion, muscle strength, nerve function, stiffness, proprioceptive, etc…,
  • Mirror Image® Cervical Spine Rehabilitation Procedures and Protocols: an overview of recent randomized trials with long-term follow up applications
    1 hour/Lecture/Exam Procedures/Diagnosis/ or Technique

He has authored approximately 160 peer-reviewed spine related publications, 7 spine textbooks, and numerous conference proceedings. He is a highly respected chiropractic researcher, educator, and authority in today’s profession. Dr. Harrison is / has been a manuscript reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed Spine journals including: Spine, Clinical Biomechanics, Clinical Anatomy, Archives of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the European Spine Journal, BMC Complimentary Alternative Medicine, and BMC Musculo-Skeletal Disorders. Dr. Harrison is a past member to the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), is a former International Chiropractors Association’s (ICA) Nevada State Assembly Representative member; and is the acting Chair of the PCCRP Chiropractic Radiography Guidelines.
