This course provides an integrated education for the Doctor of Chiropractic in the Science and Art of chiropractic analysis and management of patients injured in motor vehicle collisions.  Biomechanical, neuro-physiological, and epidemiologic aspects of whiplash injuries will be reviewed and discussed. Understanding/differentiating subtle and complex ligament injuries of the cervical spine will be presented. Litigation and documentation of whiplash injuries and a review of the International Chiropractors Associations Best Practice and Whiplash Injury Guidelines will be presented. An update-to-date review of research material will be presented supporting the utilization and efficacy of a variety of Chiropractic examination/documentation procedures, and treatment techniques across motor vehicle injury populations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyze biomechanical models of cervical lordosis and their relationship to sagittal plane alignment and whiplash injury mechanisms.
  • Identify biomechanical cervical subluxation patterns associated with trauma, including snap-through buckling models of abnormal cervical curvature.
  • Evaluate functional and neurological outcome measures used in whiplash assessment, including head repositioning accuracy, spirometry, grip strength, isometric muscle strength/endurance, and dual-task testing.
  • Differentiate ligamentous injury patterns of the spine in whiplash patients, including injuries to the alar ligament, anterior/posterior longitudinal ligaments, facet capsules, and intervertebral discs.
  • Interpret quantitative and qualitative outcome measures used in motor vehicle collision (MVC) cases, including SF-36, VAS, Oswestry Disability Index, and Neck Disability Index.
  • Apply evidence-based clinical guidelines to determine appropriate chiropractic treatment frequency, duration of care, and clinical management strategies for patients with whiplash injuries.
  • Develop rehabilitation strategies for cervical spine injuries, including progression to traction procedures, selection of traction methods, and identification of indications and contraindications for cervical traction protocols!

Hours 1-5 Biomechanical, Neurological, and Epidemiologic Aspects of Whiplash Injury

  • Sagittal plane models of the cervical lordosis;
  • Biomechanical cervical subluxation categories indicative of trauma;
  • Snap through buckling as a model of abnormal cervical curvatures in the sagittal plane;
  • A literature review regarding the cervical lordosis and health outcomes in whiplash injured populations.
  • Head Repositioning Accuracy (HRA);
  • Spirometry –Pulmonary functional measures;
  • Grip Strength;
  • Isometric muscle strength & Endurance;
  • Posture outcomes
  • Dual Task: Cognitive and functional assessments

Hour 6. Identification and Understanding of Spine Ligament Injuries

  • Identification of alar ligament injuries in whiplash injured patients,
  • Identification of anterior and posterior longitudinal ligament injuries,
  • Identification of facet capsular and intervertebral disc injuries in whiplash injured patients.
  • Biomechical cutoff values for segmental rotations and translations instability in the cervical and lumbar spines with selective information in the thoracic spine

Hours 7-10 Documentation & Outcome Measurements in Whiplash Injuries

  • Quantitative vs. qualitative examination outcome measures,
  • Outcomes assessment tools in the MVC patient, SF36, VAS, Oswestry, Neck Disability
  • Structural outcomes: Posture, alignment, pathology, anomaly,
  • Perceptive outcomes: Pain, disability, functional and health quality of life measures.
  • Functional and Physiological assessments: Range of motion, intersegmental motion, muscle strength, nerve function, stiffness, proprioceptive, etc.

Hour 11 Evidence Based MVC Practice Guidelines: ICA Best Practices

  • List of Chiropractic Techniques and their evidence,
  • Adjustment of the subluxation: Outcomes in pain syndromes,
  • Confounding patient conditions that alter frequency and duration of Chiropractic care,
  • Chiropractic Frequency and Duration Recommendations,
  • Maintenance vs. Supportive Chiropractic care for injured populations.

Hours 12-15 Case Management & Case Studies of the Cervical Spine in Whiplash Mirror Image Cervical Spine Rehabilitation Procedures and Protocols

  • How to Progress the Patient into Cervical Spine Traction Procedures,
  • Types of Lateral Cervical Traction Methods with 16 categories of sagittal subluxations,
  • Home traction for the cervical spine: Indications & contraindications,
  • Postural Traction for Coronal Plane Displacements of the cervical spine,
  • Traction Procedures for disc herniations and canal stenosis of the cervical spine.
  • CBP cervical rehabilitation in several case reports published in the peer-reviewed literature.
  • CBP equipment and patient needs.

Deed E. Harrison, D.C., graduated from Life-West Chiropractic College in 1996. Dr. Harrison has developed and researched original spinal rehabilitation procedures and has lectured to spine clinicians at nearly 1000 professional educational conferences around the world. He has authored (co-authored) approximately 278 peer-reviewed spine related publications, 7 spine textbooks, and numerous conference proceedings. He is a highly respected chiropractic researcher and educator in the realm of conservative spine care. Dr. Harrison is a manuscript reviewer for several top-tier, Q1, peer-reviewed Spine journals including. He has developed and completed two successful Special Issues on spine rehabilitation for the Journal of Clinical Medicine as a Guest Editor. Additionally, he is an academic editorial board member of Scientific Reports and the Journal of Clinical Medicine. Dr. Harrison is a past member to the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), is a former International Chiropractors Association’s (ICA) Nevada State Assembly Representative member, and he formerly held a position on the Chiropractic Physicians Board of Nevada. Currently, Dr. Harrison is the President / CEO of Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP®)Technique & Seminars and is the President of CBP NonProfit, Inc. – a spinal research foundation. Dr. Harrison directs and owns a large chiropractic rehabilitation and education facility in Eagle, ID, USA called the Ideal Spine Health Center. Currently, he been preliminarily / conditionally accepted into a PhD program and will be pursuing his Doctorate in Forensic Medicine.
