The Role of Breathing Patterns in Posture, Movement, and Sport Performance
The purpose of this presentation is to understand how breathing patterns play a critical role in posture, movement, and sport performance. The two roles of the diaphragm will be described including how crural attachments to the lumbar spine as well as delivery of airflow and pressure into a chest wall drive pelvis, ribcage, and spinal movement and position. Understanding asymmetrical differences, left hemi-diaphragm and right hemi-diaphragm, is essential in managing airflow as it relates to patterns of breathing that directly affect posture, performance and gait.
Learning Objectives:
- Review how anatomical asymmetries affect the axial skeleton’s movement, position, posture and performance.
- Understand movement patterns and alignment of the axial skeleton.
- Learn objective testing of posture and breathing patterns.
- Address implementation of at home exercise programs to improve breathwork and posture.
- Understand how to utilize PRI breathing, exercise/techniques for balanced delivery of position and airflow for the purpose of managing normal human asymmetrical function.

0-0:10 Defining anatomical asymmetries of the left and right hemi-diaphragm as it affects alignment, posture, movement and performance of the pelvis and ribcage.
0:10-0:20 Examples of over-lateralization of an axial skeleton will be provided with functional cortical dominance of one side of the brain with a respiration construct
0:20-0:30Examples of forward head posture (FHP) will be presented in the context of airflow and breathing management
0:30-0:40 Examples of PRI objective testing will be provided
0:40-0:50 Examples of PRI non-manual techniques with balloon utilization and reasoning will be provided
