The Role of Breathing Patterns in Posture, Movement, and Sport Performance

The Role of Breathing Patterns in Posture, Movement, and Sport Performance

The purpose of this presentation is to understand how breathing patterns play a critical role in posture, movement, and sport performance.    The two roles of the diaphragm will be described including how crural attachments to the lumbar spine as well as delivery of airflow and pressure into a chest wall drive pelvis, ribcage, and spinal movement and position.  Understanding asymmetrical differences, left hemi-diaphragm and right hemi-diaphragm, is essential in managing airflow as it relates to patterns of breathing that directly affect posture, performance and gait.

Learning Objectives:

Objective evaluation of how anatomical asymmetries affect the axial skeleton’s movement, position, posture and performance will be the outcome focus. In addition, understanding movement patterns and alignment of the axial skeleton will be provided by presenting examples of objective testing and a home exercise program centered on utilizing PRI breathing exercise/techniques for balanced delivery of position and airflow for the purpose of managing normal human asymmetrical function.

About the Presenter

Robert “Skip” George, DC

Robert “Skip” George, D.C. has practiced chiropractic in San Diego and La Jolla, CA since 1980.  He is one of the handful of chiropractic doctors nationally that integrates chiropractic, rehabilitation and sports performance training.  He holds specialties as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner (CCSP), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Postural Restoration Certified (PRC).  In addition, he is trained in Active Release Technique (ART), certified in the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) as well as being a former instructor for the FMS.

One of his purposes has been to continually add “tools” to his tool belt to improve patient outcomes utilizing the most effective evidence based approaches.  One of the most dynamic and state-of-the-art approaches is PRI for rehabilitation and sports performance.

In 2014, Dr. George was the first chiropractic doctor to become Postural Restoration Certified (PRC) with the Postural Restoration Institute.  His practice, La Jolla Sport and Spine, centers around the PRI approach to structure, position, posture and balanced function.  One of the main premises of PRI is that restoring function and balance requires a foundation that provides normal function and position of the diaphragm and its relationship to the ribcage, spine and continuing with the rest of the skeletal structure. The diaphragm is fundamental and restoring proper breathing with alignment is critical for effective treatment outcomes.  The success of most treatments, including chiropractic, will be inhibited without addressing this most important muscle of the body and the neurology that drives it.. His clinic is a designated Postural Restoration Center.

Dr. George has lectured nationally and internationally on topics ranging from sports injuries, concussion and the Postural Restoration Institute.  He has also written numerous articles on sport performance and rehabilitation.
